Hi Y'all.  Happy Week 2.  Here is a scene and a love duet inspired by Rodgers and Hammerstein. I was thinking this could happen earlier in the show, which would send our heroine off on her journey into all of our vignettes. Looking forward to getting inspired with all of you tomorrow.

DECK SCENE
(Author’s note: The SERVER will eventually have a name, once we decide on casting. He is American though.  SALLY’S name can and should change. SALLY is from San Francisco, California the SERVER is from Detroit, Michigan. )

On the deck of the ship. Evening.

SERVER
It is so nice to finally catch a break. Gotta love that fresh air.
                               SALLY
The stars are so bright.  No light pollution. (Beat.)  I’m glad to be sitting out here with you.

                               SERVER
Me too.

                               SALLY
How soon do you have to go back downstairs?

                               SERVER
I’ve got twenty minutes.
                               SALLY
That’s all?

                               SERVER
People need breakfast.

                               SALLY
It’s 10:30 at night.

                               SERVER
That’s the life.

                               SALLY
What about your breakfast?

                               SERVER
The real question is what about my family’s breakfast?

                               SALLY
What?
                               SERVER
I’m here working to send money to my mom and brother back in Detroit.

                               SALLY
Why? I don’t understand.

                               SERVER
Well you know, how Detroit went bankrupt?

                               SALLY
Kind of. I don’t really follow the news.

                               SERVER
It’s important to.

                               SALLY
I’m realizing that.

    (Beat.)

So what happened?
                               SERVER
My mom worked for a vehicle manufacturing company and they laid her off.  She’s on unemployment but it’s not enough. So almost every penny I make is sent back to her, so she can take care of herself and my little brother.

                               SALLY
Where’s your dad?
                               SERVER
Who knows.

                               SALLY
I’m sorry. I didn’t know.

                               SERVER
It’s okay. Skies like these that make it better. And sitting out here with you doesn’t hurt.

                               SALLY
(She’s nervous and doesn’t know what to do.)

I feel like dancing.

(SALLY, inspired by the moonlight starts twirling around on the deck. SERVER, enamored by her dance, stands and takes her hands.)

SONG TIME!!!, Love ballad duet! ( which will be written by Hanna and Matt.)
Some lyrics I will now spew out onto the page:

HIM:
What you don’t know
makes you beautiful
What you don't know
makes you naive
Untouched by the cruel world
Polished, rosy, pink
HER:
What you do know
Makes you beautiful
What you do know
Makes you true
Touched by the real world
Humbled, noble, blue

Teach me how to be a better person.

HIM:
Teach me to remember what is good.

BOTH:
Teach me how to love.
Teach me how to trust.
Teach me, now.

What I don't know…
What I don't know…
But what I do know
Is that I know you.

HARMONIES!!!

END SONG

(They embrace…or kiss.)

                                    SALLY
Did we just fall in love?

                                    SERVER
It’s very possible.

                                    SALLY
I’m realizing that I’ve been too wrapped up in my own problems. Yes, it sucks that I’m 4 inches shorter than I need to be. But there are such bigger problems out there.

                                    SERVER
It’s true.

                                    SALLY
It makes me wonder what else I’m unaware of.  I need to learn more about the world.

                                    SERVER
Well you know, there is a lot that can be learned on this ship.  People from all walks of life are onboard. Go explore and see what you find.
                                    SALLY
I will.  (Beat.) When can I see you again?

                                    SERVER
Tomorrow night. Same time.  Tell me what you find.

                                    SALLY
Will do.

   (They kiss.)

Toodles!

      (He leaves.)

To the underbelly of the ship! We’ll see what’s in store!
SOUND CUE: DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN.

       (She exits.)

                                    END SCENE!
